You can also replace
your desk chair with a stability ball. The constant
adjustment and readjustment that your body makes on
the ball will work your core muscles while sitting
at your desk.
Stability balls have been used for decades in
physical rehabilitation clinics around the world. But
these days, stability balls have gone mainstream as
personal trainers, group fitness classes and home exercise
videos have all embraced this versatile and economical
piece of training equipment. The exercise ball is a great
tool for strengthening the abs, but it also helps you
reach those hard-to-get-to muscles (such as the TVA and
erector spinae). Stability ball exercises offer
challenging ways to work a variety of muscle groups. You
can improve your balance and overall coordination by using
the stability ball in place of a bench while doing
traditional strength exercises. The instability of the
ball forces you to use your core muscles to keep your body
level. Core strength is important, says the American
Council on Exercise (ACE), because the muscles of the
lower back and abdomen serve as a solid foundation for
day-to-day activities as well as posture.
So, not only do you get balance training, (an often overlooked
component in most exercise programs), but stability balls also
work your core in almost every exercise that is performed. This
means you work multiple muscles at one time, making you burn
more calories, and increases total body strength by forcing
your body to balance itself. Therefore, your core will be
better prepared to support the rest of your body in whatever
activity you do.
Before beginning an
exercise program using the stability ball remember that
stability balls are not one size fits all. Most brands of
stability balls come in several sizes, and generally speaking,
adults 5' to 5'6" tall should use a 55cm ball, while those 5'7"
and over should use a 65cm ball. When sitting on the ball, your
thighs should be parallel to the floor. Parents wishing to
purchase a stability ball for their child should consult with a
trained professional to ensure proper sizing.
When inflating the
ball, use more air for a more unstable and tougher workout, and
less air is better suited to those just getting used to ball
workouts.
